Our Approach

We all have a unique way of seeing the world.

Here at Apraxis, we provide an eco-integrative model of therapy and create a container for healing in a variety of different ways.

Individual Therapy

For emerging adults, young adults and adults.

  • Do you ever feel lost or uncertain about the direction of your life?

  • Do you feel stuck and unable to make important decisions, no matter how big or small they may be?

  • Do you find it difficult to stop negative intrusive thoughts?

  • Is there a chronic feeling of emptiness, or loneliness pervading your life?

  • Can you be hyper critical of yourself, or hyper critical of others?

  • Do you feel the weight of the world pushing you down?

  • Does your anxiety prevent you from living the life you’d like?

  • Do you struggle with holding boundaries with others?  Or struggle to maintain healthy relationships?

  • Do you worry about being a burden on others and feel like your needs are never met?

These are just some of the feelings and thoughts that our clients are experiencing when they make the decision to seek help at Apraxis Center.

Individual therapy is an invaluable resource that addresses the difficulties each person faces in their life.

Apraxis provides a safe, supportive environment to be able to effectively address our clients’ unique needs.

We place great importance on cultivating a warm, loving and authentic relationship with our clients, and do so by embodying empathy, genuineness, and compassion from a place of non-judgment.  We’ve found that the ability to grow, change, and heal is mediated through this type of relationship.

After working with our clinicians, our clients walk away feeling more empowered, confident and grounded in themselves.  They’ve learned to reauthor their personal narrative from a self-loving and growth-centric perspective and feel more intimate, connected and balanced in their personal relationships.  Also common is the experience of living with greater meaning and purpose and feeling more fulfilled and enriched in their life.

Our clinicians are highly trained and skilled at being able to address each client’s unique needs. To schedule an appointment, or learn more about how we can you, please contact us.

Couples Therapy

Whether it’s improving and restoring an intimate relationship, or needing help transitioning through a separation or divorce, or navigating non-traditional relationships, our relationally trained clinicians are here to help.

  • Are you and your partner struggling to communicate more effectively?

  • Have you felt like the intimacy in your relationship has been lost?

  • Do you find you and your partner keep engaging in patterns that cause conflicts, but find it difficult to break those patterns?

  • Are you and your partner in (or considering) a non-traditional relationship and needing help with navigating the challenges that arise?

  • Do you need help navigating the decision to separate or stay in your relationship?

These are just some of the feelings and thoughts that couples are experiencing when they make the decision to seek help at Apraxis Center.

It’s no secret that being in and maintaining a relationship is a challenge.

Having an objective third party can be a vital resource to help you and your partner address and work through the many challenges that you face.

Our couples counselors are all skilled and trained from relational theories and modalities. We use approaches that allow for greater understanding of the complexities of relationships, which help get to root causes that are causing distress and conflict, and to then gain the skills to re-pattern unhealthy habits. Some of the theories and modalities we use are: emotionally focused therapy (EFT), attachment theory and relational psychoanalysis.

We understand that it is often helpful to combine couples therapy with individual therapy.  Depending on the situation, you may have the option for you and your partner to work with the same clinician with a blend of individual and couples counseling, or each partner work separately with different clinicians, and then come together for a collaborative co therapy experience where both therapists are there with both partners.

Family Therapy

The ecology of the home can create harmony and discord - our family therapy is aimed at restoring relationships and improving the system of the family.

  • Does your family experience high amounts of conflict or stress in the home?

  • Have you found yourself in a triangulation between your partner and your child that is putting a strain on each relationship?

  • Are you feeling overwhelmed, powerless, or burnt out by struggles with one or more of your children?

  • Has the blending of families caused disruptions for you and your children?

  • Have you and a sibling, or parent, have a long standing conflictual history and wanting help mending the relationship?

Our family therapy can be a stand alone therapeutic service aimed at addressing the needs of the family, or it can be used in conjunction with individual therapy.

Our family therapy clinicians are trained from a systems perspective.

This means they are skilled at understanding that a family is composed of many different relationships, and through these relationships different roles, behaviors, and responsibilities emerge that affect one another.

Additionally, our clinicians have skills and tools that can help family members learn to improve communication styles, manage conflicts, heal relationships, and help parents navigate the challenges of parenthood.

Emerging Adult Therapy

For teens and young adults (ages 16-26)

We support adolescents and young adults during the transition to adulthood, recognizing the challenges that come with this period.

As an emerging adult do you experience the following…

  • Struggling to maintain a healthy college and personal life balance?

  • Wondering if you’ve made the right decision with the job or college path you chose?

  • Feeling alienated and disconnected from your peers?

  • Desiring more intimacy with partners and friends?

  • Experiencing a general apathetic attitude about life?

  • Wishing that your life had greater meaning and fulfilment to it?

  • Fearful about all the responsibilities of adulthood, which leads to feeling immobilized?

  • Engaged in unhealthy habits like excessive gaming, youtube, social media use, reddit forums, or partying?

As a parent of an emerging adult, do you observe the following…

  • Withdrawal and isolation from family members and peers?

  • Failing grades at college, or noticing a downward trend in grades?

  • Difficulty at maintaining a job?

  • Unhealthy habits of hygiene, sleep and eating?

  • An excess use of technology – phone, social media, gaming?

  • Consistency in avoidance of conversations, eye-contact and other non-verbal communications?

  • Conversations that trend towards excess worrying about next steps in life?

The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a time marked with so much excitement and optimism.

It’s a period of unbound possibilities, a horizon of new freedom and opportunities.  It’s also a time filled with questions about identity.

At Apraxis, we recognize the significance of these themes and the pressure they impose on emerging adults. Despite the positive and optimistic aspects of this transition, we understand anxiety and fear is also present and can lead to significant disruption and struggles for our youth.

Emerging adults are facing alarming rates of anxiety, depression, addiction, suicide, self-harm, feelings of hopelessness, disconnection/loneliness, and a general sense of disorientation. This period of transition often leaves them feeling lost. Unfortunately, our society and culture are failing to adequately support emerging adults through this critical time.

We care deeply at trying to fill the gap between the needs of our emerging adults and the lack of support of our society.

We understand, from both academic research and personal experience, that a major cause of this support gap is our society's narrow and pressurized focus on producing "good," "productive," and "consumer" adult citizens, which causes us to overlook a fundamental aspect of youth development that speaks to a deeper part of their experience

Emerging adults have a natural inclination towards exploring important existential questions about life and spirituality. They seek to understand what it means to live a purposeful and satisfying life, and are eager to discover ways to put values of the common good and environmental betterment into action. Above all, they desire genuine connections with like-minded individuals who share their curiosity and desire for growth.

Our goal at Apraxis is to be a place where emerging adults can come and feel safe and supported at exploring these more important elements of life.

The bridge we are creating allows for genuine self exploration and authentic connection. With self, others and nature.

Through their work with our clinicians, emerging adults gain greater self-awareness and clarity about their goals in life. They develop a stronger sense of confidence in their identity and their potential contributions to the world. As a result, they become more optimistic and hopeful about their journey into adulthood. We observe this transformation as they move from a state of feeling "lost-in-transition" to one of "confidence-in-transition."
